OUTSIDE IN: The Story of Art in the Streets

From director Alex Stapleton, OUTSIDE IN: The Story of Art in the Streets is a celebratory and historical look at street art through the lens of the Museum of Contemporary Art’s groundbreaking exhibition, “Art in the Streets.” The film features renowned artists Shepard Fairey, Lee Quiñones, Swoon, Futura, Mister Cartoon, Revok, Martha Cooper, Invader and many more influential visual savants in recent memory. Taking place from April 17-August 8, 2011, the exhibition traced the development of graffiti and street art from the 1970s to the global movement it has become today, concentrating on key cities where a unique visual language or attitude evolved.

2013 Ferrari

Arguably one of the most underwhelming vehicles in its lineup, Ferrari’s California isn’t giving up just yet. After a tweak of the car’s ECU, upgraded suspension components, and undergoing various aluminum manufacturing improvements, the two-seat cabriolet returns with 30 more horsepower and 30 less kilograms to help propel itself from 0-60 in a staggering 3.8 seconds. While already notorious for being the first GT car in Ferrari’s history to have an engine mounted in the front of the chassis, the now all-new California, debuting at the Geneva International Motor Show later this month, will certainly not be forgotten.

"Time" by John Clang

"Time" by John Clang

John Clang’s art is a bewildering timescape of distinct strangers sharing space in an ordinary urban landscape. Capturing a fascinating perspective of movement across space and time, “Time” is a series of montage-style images recording people on the street in the same location over a period. The time-spatial distortion experienced by his subjects coupled with his keen abstract aesthetics create coherent nostalgic images that tickle the philosophical and romantic imagination. Are we somehow closer to others in our environment across varying time because of the real space we share?

Whitney Houston Dies at 48

Whitney Houston Dies at 48

We have lost yet another legend for the beginning of the 2012 year, the announcement was made just earlier that the iconic artist & actress Whitney Houston died at her Beverly Hills hotel at the age of 48. The official word from the Beverly Hills police pronounced the singer as deceased at 3:55pm PST in the comfort of her hotel. There is a small amount of information known at this point surrounding the the reason of her passing, but I am sure we will hear more about it very soon. This comes as a shock as well because it was on the eve of arguably Hollywood’s biggest even of the year, the Grammys – an event which she has performed at many times.

Y-3 2012 Spring/Summer Black Savage Sneakers

There are some new kicks from Y-3′s 2012 spring/summer collection! This sneaker has been named the Black Savage which looks about right! As you can see there are a number of eye-catching features to this shoe. This picture depicts the mid-top silhouette in black, white, blue and red. It offers a unique lacing system with thick blue laces, logo embossed gunmetal lace-hooks and a textured leather casing. The innovative elements carry on with a rubber serrated outsole, a white rubber shell toe as well as a padded collar and tongue. I am not a shoe guy because everything looks the same, but these shoes interest me because they are not the norm. The Y-3 Black Savage Sneakers are currently available through SSENSE online store and they are priced at $470. I personally cannot afford them, but its nice to see some change.

Kris Staxx Interview

Kris Staxx Interview

Tell us about yourself. What’s your name? Where are you from?
- My name is Kris Staxx, from the Bay Area Ca The Oakland/Berkeley region to be more specific.

How did you get your start in the music industry? Who or what inspired you?
- Honestly ? I started rapping back in high school, I think it was 2005, that shit was just a hobby back then but people started to tell me they like what they heard so me and boys put a group together and became the Teknitionz. The people who insired me early in my career were my group mates, we were like a family we did everything together; big events and shows brought so much positive energy in, that's when I knew I was in love with this music shit.

What upcoming projects are you working on?
- I'm currently working on a lot new things but the biggest are my new single that I recently dropped "Favorite Girl" which should be in the mix on your local radio station soon than later go ahead & google it if you haven't heard it yet. Next in line is my new Mixtape " Part II" I'm gonna drop it in March be on the look out for that too. As an addition I'm shooting a video to every song on that Mixtape just to keep it all interesting.

Since the start of your music career what is, in your opinion, the best track you have ever made?
- Damn that's a hard one, But if I had to pick Just 1? I'd say the track I'm most known for "I'm Blasted" featuring & Produced by my boy Young L. I did that joint like 3 years ago & still have people requesting a download link to that one you know? So yea I'd say "I'm Blasted."

If you could choose one artist to collaborate with on a track who would it be? Why?
- Hands Down Lil Wayne Because I've listened to his music since like 6th grade lol I've always been a Wayne fan so yea I'd callab with him.

This site’s purpose is living and representing the Based lifestyle. What does the word "based" mean to you?
- Yo I grew up in Berkeley .. Where I believe that word "Based" was originated. By either my Guys T.I.B. and Sirealz of Team Knoc or The pack. So yea I always interpreted that word as meaning unique and being different from everyone else you know just not giving a fuck & doing your thing at all means. I believe I live by the " Based" code definitely.

Who are your favorite artists right now? Who’s playing through your speakers?
- As of late.. I hate to say it cuz I wasn't feeling him at first but I fuck with that nigga 2 Chainz hard he came out of no where but his whole swag reminds me of my own. I also Mess with Jeezy right now his new album pulled me back in as a fan, I though he was dead or somethin lol but yea those are the two artists that get heavy rotation in my speakers and iPod right now.

What’s something that people might not know about you?
- Y'all might now believe this.. But I don't smoke, lol and every time I tell people that they look at me like I'm crazy as fuck or I'm committing a crime haha. I don't fall under that stereotype as a rapper, I might fall under others but not that one.

What’s some advice you can give to upcoming/aspiring artists that you have learned so far that may come in handy to someone else?
- The best advice I could give to another artist that I've learned in my career ... Is to stay consistent with everything you do and go harder than everyone else, when they are sleeping you should be up working and doing something productive thats what puts you ahead of the rest.

Where can people find more about you?
- The direct source for everything Kris Staxx Oriented is here. Also be sure to follow me on Twitter & Facebook.

"Brooklyn - Berlin" Exhibit Recap

January 26 marked the debut of the “Brooklyn – Berlin” exhibition from legendary street artists Mode 2 and Stash at Stockholm’s Galleri Jonas Kleerup. Having made the full-fledged leap from the streets to gallery shows, the exhibit displayed their penchant for improvisation with works based on the graffiti they used to create in near-darkness under the pressures of illegality. A perfect reflection of Mode 2 and Stash’s respective influences and signature styles, “Brooklyn – Berlin” emphasized the roots from which the two became the respected artists they are today.

200 Million Dollar Artist Payout

News has already broke that Facebook has announced a $5 billion USD IPO, ensuring that the revolutionary company will have enough revenue to continue to expand its reaches across the internet landscape. It seems this story comes with a bit of an artistic discovery as well. Noted artist and Hypebeast regular, David Choe, is in line to make over $200 million USD for his stake in the company after choosing stock over monetary payment when he was hired by then Facebook President, Sean Parker, to paint their first offices in Palo Alto, California back in 2005. It’s unknown whether Choe has already sold off portions of his stocks prior to the filing of the IPO, but one thing is for certain – Choe’s artwork could provide more money from his paintings than Sotheby’s attracted for its record-breaking $200.7 million USD auction in 2008 for work by Damien Hirst.

Recently, Interview Magazine had a chance to sit down with the emcee to talk about a bevy of topics. Below is an excerpt of the article while the entire piece can be seen here.

Throwback Thursday #20

Since Roach Gigz released his new video this week I was inclined to listen to a little more of him this week. This is one of my all time favorites, "Im Up." Enjoy!

Greg Selkoe – CEO/Founder of Karmaloop.com and Karmaloop TV

Greg Selkoe – CEO/Founder of Karmaloop.com and Karmaloop TV

In a short few years, Karmaloop has effectively redefined the landscape for both retail and culture. For better or worse, Karmaloop has often been a prickly subject as they’ve essentially cornered the market and risen significantly above the rest to represent streetwear’s largest and most powerful retailer. Partnering with Pharrell Williams, the announcing of a full-fledged Karmaloop TV was seen as a further move to help diversify their portfolio. Despite an overall negative outlook on both American and global markets, Karmaloop still managed a highly respecatble 81% in growth on the back of $130 million in revenue for 2011. With so many avenues to explore, Karmaloop looks to continue its juggernaut movement as we spoke with founder Greg Selkoe on Karmaloop’s current business.

What’s the current workforce/company structure like at Karmaloop?
- It is about 180 employees between our Boston and New York offices, and we have another 250 in our warehouse in Ohio. The company has separate departments like tech, marketing… but we have a really “flat” organization, meaning that everyone has a lot of freedom to do what they need to do, as long as they get the job done. We are not a very hierarchical organization where there are a lot of different levels, we’re all just one big team. We encourage people to be creative and try new things. We like crazy thinkers and people who don’t give a fuck what people think and are willing to throw out how they feel and express themselves. People who work at Karmaloop are expected to bust their ass but have fun doing it. The New York office has the Karmaloop TV media team, although we’re starting to build out a big studio in our Boston headquarters as well, and the Private Labels (clothing brands) division is based in New York. Boston is where all of the e-commerce operations are.

In difficult economic times especially in the U.S., what do you attribute your growth to?
- Like anything, there are many factors why we continue to grow and be successful. We had an incredible year in 2011, where we grew by 81%. I think a lot of the reason why we’ve been successful is that we try to just be honest and clear about who we are. We love the culture but we don’t take ourselves so seriously. We work our asses off trying to innovate and bring the freshest brands to our audience around the planet. I think we listen to people and we are quick to admit when we fuck up. Everyone in the company truly loves the culture and the clothing, and I would like to think that our employees love working at Karmaloop and that it shows through in everything we do. I think that has helped drive us and continue our success.

What are plans for international expansion or will you continue to focus on the United States for the foreseeable future?
- We definitely won’t lose focus on the United States and Canada. But we are making a big push in Europe. We just acquired the website Street Ammo, which will eventually become Karmaloop Europe. The dude Mark [Urban] who runs the website is a real cool cat and the philosophy and brands that Street Ammo carries fits exactly with Karmaloop, so it’s a natural partnership. We have a few other plans up our sleeves but we’re not ready to announce them yet.

Karmaloop champions the idea of “verge culture,” can you describe this and how it influences your business?
- Before I answer the question I should describe what I see verge culture to be, so that those who may not have heard the term understand what we’re talking about. The term verge culture was originally coined by the guys over at Frank151… big ups Malbons! Basically it describes the first generation to grow up on the internet – a cut-and-paste culture that is always leading, never following. Verge culture fuses together many cultures and refuses to be defined by old labels. They take many disparate ideas, change and improve upon them, and make them their own. The group is multiracial, multiethnic and they define themselves first by ideas and are not limited by labels. Verge has a dual meaning – verge as in the convergence of many ideas and cultures, and verge as in being on the cutting edge. If you came through the Karmaloop office I don’t think you could find a more diverse and more creative group of people in many other places. Verge culture influences everything we do because almost everyone who works at the company is native to verge culture.
